WHY YOU HAVE TO VISIT BLUE LAGOON IN ICELAND

Be A Tourist For Once

Instead of a traveller.
Yes, the locals might be telling you to head for other geothermal baths which are less crowded, cheaper or free for use out in there the wild, but I will still recommend you to step into Blue Lagoon at least once while in Iceland.
Despite its stepper pricings and longer traveling distance, it will be worthwhile.
After all, Blue Lagoon spa is one of the most recognized landmarks in Iceland and you can't go wrong with that.

No Lies

Because unlike anything, the Blue Lagoon looks just as good as they do in pictures. With the turquoise blue waters and all, the lagoon makes for a dreamy, milky oceanic-liked photo backdrop anytime. It was claimed that the silica and sulphur in the blue waters help improve conditions for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It will be therapeutic to soak in the waters ladened with such rich natural minerals.

Why Blue?

It was purely a coincidence when the underground hot water, rich in minerals, were drilled from deep underground and came seeping into cold seawater. This gave birth to a large pool of milky blue water, warm and cosy for bathing. Due to its huge medical benefits, people started bathing in the pool in the 80s.

Do you know?

The turquoise water is constantly steamed from underground and water is replenished every 40 hours. No chemical cleaners needed. Wonders of nature indeed!

Changing Out

You will be given an electronic wrist tag upon ticketing payment for the lockers and any in-house purchases. Head to the dressing room, grab a locker and change out. Shower first before heading to the pool as per rule. It's for hygiene purposes really.
Hairdryer, shower gel, body moisturizer are available for communal use and 1 bath towel will be provided.
You may wish to bring an additional small towel for washing your face.

Bathrobes are available for additional charge.
But if you would rather save on the cash, simply dash out to the lagoon as fast as you can because it will be freezing once you step outdoors (I was there in winter), till you dip into the pool that is.
Forget about wrapping yourself with a towel, nobody does that anyway.

Entrance/Exit to the locker rooms.

Waterproof Your Phone

To take lots of photos and that perfect OOTD in your best swimsuit/bikini, prepare a waterproof casing over your phone so you can carry it wherever in the lagoon. We made the mistake of not preparing in advance and had to run twice between the pool and the lockers before we finally enjoyed ourselves hands-free.  It was a risk to drop the phones into the depths versus not being able to take more photos as we roam further into the lagoon. Give and take.

Case in point:

My heart skipped many beats faster when I could not charge up my Samsung successfully after bringing it into the pool for photo taking for a good 15 minutes. A subsequent screen display stating too much moisture at the charging port (located at the bottom of the phone which had more water contact) showed up and I had to diligently blowed dried with hot air into the port for a good number of times at night. If this happens to you don't panic, keep blow-drying your phone.
Thankfully all work out well now.

Swim, Soak, Mask and Take Lots of Photos

Try out the free volcanic Silica mud handed out at a little shelter. Spread your face over with these beneficial beauty treats as a mask.
Do not just stay in the warm fuzzy pool, head to the other end and try out the sauna and steam bath rooms. There is even a warm waterfall carved into a lava cave, as shown below ( located near where the sauna is). They are absolutely fun to experience in. Why not maximize your experince for the price paid?
Relax and take your time.
Ideally, I would have loved to spend at least 4 to 5 hours at the lagoon and facilities but we left around 2 hours 30 minutes to head to other places.

Eat or Drink Something

I know, the price on their menu is not the friendliest of all. Take for example this Blueberry Skyr Smoothie cost me near 20SGD (about 17USD)! Nonetheless, makes for a pretty photo right?
There is the Blue Cafe for simple snacks and drinks and the Lava Restaurant for more elaborate dining options.

Tips: Afterwards, condition your hair extensively as the water with their mineral and murkiness can cause your hair to be drying.

Do You Know?

Blue Lagoon is famously well known for its range of algae masks, starting from 95Eur. Once again, prices are on the higher end due to the in-house R&D to develop skincare products and conduct clinical research on the lagoon's seawater and its elements. For a good cause towards curing skin conditions really.
The Blue Lagoon Skin Care Shop has a duty free store inside the Keflavik Airport too.

How to Get There

If you do not drive, the best way will be to join the local tours. Public transport are much slower and barely sighted.
You can choose tour group packages to Blue Lagoon with English-speaking guides.
There are also the private operators:

In all, it was a wonderful experience to enjoy this nature scenic lagoon at work and totally beautiful.
If I were to return to Iceland, it will be to return to Blue Lagoon again.
Seriously.
