What to Eat at Geylang Serai's Hari Raya Ramadan Bazaar, Singaopore
You must have seen many many posts, Instagram pics and
what-not on what you can eat at this year’s Hari Raya bazaar (pasar malam) right?
Tempted by the raves and together with my foodie dearies we headed down to the bazaar
one fine Sunday evening to check out what the big hoo-ha was all about.
Hungry crowds gathered early in the evening.
Exit B from Paya Lebar Station towards the new Paya Lebar Square.
Thai Coconut Ice Cream $4.
With its prominent location and huge banner right near the
entrance of the bazaar from the train station, you can’t miss them. The Thai-
Chinese owners were in the midst of preparing and we happened to be the first
customers of that day. Though it was coconut ice cream we had purchased but
there was hardly any strong hint of coconut taste- more like vanilla ice cream
we had. Slices of coconut flesh were minimal and so were the toppings. Well,
the overall serving size definitely cannot beat the ones at Chatuchak Market,
Bangkok. With more than double the pricing, this was a not worthy deal either.

Fried Oreo Cookies. $3 for 5 pieces
The Oreo fillings were little and
way too dry. If you have eaten fried mars bars before, you wouldn’t think much
of this “cookies”. They stated their the
source of inspiration was from Korea but seriously we felt a bit “cheated” at
having to pay $5 for fried dough. The Oreos didn’t do anything much to heighten
the flavor nor did the additional 50 cents chocolate sauce did much good. We are
better off with having our Oreos and ‘Ham Jin Pang’ (fried fritters) on its
own.
Walk around the bazaar for a break from the food ( while searching for more).
What's the buzz with the long queue?
Yes! It's Churros!

by Bakes & Crafts)
These were undeniably one of the best we had at the bazaar- the
more price-worthy ones among all the new snacks. Just besides the ice-cream rolls’ stall,
massive queue awaits as well.
Though simply deep fried, there were at
least some creativity in the flavors offered- Pandan or Red velvet flavor with
Gula Melaka Dip (something Singapore). Warm and fluffy inside and crispy on the
outside. It was something special for us at least.

We spotted this popular Takoyaki stall and gave it a try.
Takoyaki, $3 for 5 pieces.
These yummy little crisp balls filled with seafood or ham
and cheese are mouth-popping snacks found commonly at bazaars. This stall’s
however had slight crisp on the outside and not too gelat overall. For this
pricing it was well worth it.
Ice-Cream Rolls, $5
Practically the highlight of the food bazaar, you see queues
snaking all the way just for these. You queue. get a number and collect
them later. Part of the experience is actually watching them serve up the
ice-cream! So, don’t wander off too far.
I would say for the price, 80%
definitely goes towards the effort in creating the ice-cream rolls as the ice-cream
were flattened, scooped, rolled and chopped. It was all very creative in
display and showmanship, when they could have just scoop one big fat spoon and
serve in a cup.
Lots of dedication and
effort before presenting to the customers.
Taste wise?
Don’t expect smooth rich velvety ice cream. As
mentioned, they tasted pretty ordinary just like what you can get from vendors
off the streets peddling on ice cream carts. And if you must take photos, 2 is
the maximum and you won’t have time to find the best angle before the rolls all
melt into a pool of cream.
