[Food Review] Big Mama Korean Restaurant (Tiong Bahru, Singapore)

by - Saturday, October 11, 2014

You won't really think about Korean food when in the Tiong Bahru area, but behold for if the craving comes, Big Mama can certainly come to the rescue!

Big Mama is a homely Korean restaurant with huge ample seating spaces. During weekday, lunch crowds gathered from the nearby offices and dinner is often filled up as well as customers drink and dine. I understand night time tends to be way crowded and you might want to reserve in advance.

Okay, it has been a while since I have been to a Korean eatery serving some of my favourite side dishes 반찬 and we super love their selections! Besides the anchovies and kimchi more commonly seen, there's the mini glass noodle, spinach, mung bean jelly 녹두묵, and lotus roots which are pretty  rare!!

Super dig their side dishes so much so we asked for refills at least 4 times. Yes free replenish as always with Korean eateries. Once could really fill themselves with the delicious side dishes!

The speciality here- Dakgalbi $15/pax. Needs no introduction right? A pot of stirred fried chicken in their homemade chili sauce, mixed in with assorted veggies like cabbage, onions etc., cook and served fresh in front of you. Pricing is reasonable and taste was spicy hot and awesome. Everything you request for in a Dakgalbi.

We ordered 2 pax servings. Super appetizing.

If this doesn't satisfy you, order a bowl of white rice to be mixed in and stir-fried till crisp at the base. The rice will only be added in and cooked by the service staff after you have finished all/almost all of your mains in the galbi. Super love the rice and the 锅巴 (burnt part).

Totally Cleared our plates clean.
Big Mama is a down-to-earth restaurant. No fuss, but we were attended by the service staff quite well despite sometimes having to call a bit too long sometimes. Could be due to lack of manpower and the mass crowds. No complains there, as we were not expecting too much on the services . There are korean- natives and foreigner servers as well.

Their other specialty is the Suyuk, which is steamed pork belly~ who wants to try? Can't wait to try their other items soon~~~
