REMEMBERING ROCHOR CENTRE — THE 4 ICONIC COLORED BLOCKS GO INTO HISTORY

by - Monday, July 18, 2016

Famed for its distinctive colors — yellow, blue, green and red, these four distinctive blocks of  Housing Development Board (HDB) public housing flats are about to go down into another page of Singapore's history. With the centre's demolishing nearing ( predicted to be any time this year though exact date is unknown), recent months have seen nostalgic Singaporeans from all walks of life —photographers, youngsters, baby boomers — heading down to capture the remnants.
This bustling community enclave was once filled with hundred over tenants in its prime '70s and '80s.

Facades of Singapore's Unique Icon

The demolishing was initiated to make way for part of the North-South Expressway ( Yes more roads for our overpopulated city) and the announcement came end of 2015. Amongst sighs of defeat and unwillingness to relocate, the demolishing took quite some years ( from announcement to execution), to give ample time for the shop owners to relocate to other sites ( impossible to find comparable rentals).
Despite petition and unwillingness among the residents, shop owners and conservationists, historical importance can't beat the importance of  a country's development for the booming population, and the buildings, unfortunately have to go.

My Younger Days

These 4 blocks represent part of my childhood as my family and I frequented the Rochor/ Si Ma Lu area often, parking our car in Rochor Centre for its relatively cheaper parking rates as compared to nearby OG or Fu Lu Shou Complex. We patronized the knick-knack shops, NTUC on Level one and dropped by the many 'parties' shops selling decorations at a wholesales rate.
Connecting to nearby landmarks such as the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, Rochor Food Centre, OG, Sim Lim Square, Bugis Street and Bugis Shopping District, there were no lack of  activities in this prime location.

Unfortunately, we often live in the busy present and never thought to pause amidst our busy footsteps. This announcement of demolish came as a shock

Glad we did a little tour in this estate, truly, for the first time.

Enjoy the Visuals

It is still not too late to head down to Rochor centre for some photo shoots as keepsake.

Residents

Residents of the rooftop included the numerous pigeon gangs.

Everywhere you go, they will be.

'Localised' Void Deck

As with SG 50 last year, special posters were put up. They were, rather quirky to say the least. Especially, in contrast to the otherwise desolated void deck, saved for some roaming photographers.

Unique right? Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system.
 We thought so too.

Overlooking down , this is the view you will see.

By then, many shops have already shut their doors and relocated.

While there, take an OOTD against the iconic blocks too

BYE Rochor centre, you will be missed.
