[HONG KONG TRAVEL 1] EATS, PLAY 2016- OCEAN EMPIRE CONGEE 海皇粥店 (CAUSEWAY BAY 銅鑼灣) )

by - Monday, May 16, 2016

Hello Hong Kong!
I had just finished introducing Taichung City's Outskirt area and how you can play within a day . Now, in the new upcoming posts I will jump fly over to introduce Hong Kong first before I head back to introduce Taiwan.

Thanks to my ger, jiehui for planning and researching the 4 days 3 nights trip to Hong Kong, we headed there on 31st March to 3rd April 2016 . It was an eat and sightseeing plenty trip! Though pretty rush but still fun time with my bestie. Spend more days in Hong Kong if you want to EAT more.

This will be the first post of the eats and sights of the Pearl of the Orient.

Ocean Empire Congee
The Ocean Empire is well known for their slurp-py delish porridge and I was not disappointed. In fact, we left  very satisfied and happy after a full flavorful morning breakfast and we was so filling it lasted us throughout lunch time. Not exactly good when we had so much other good food to try =) But that’s a happy problem.

/ 肠. Zha Chang.
Translate on the menu as  [Twisted Doughnut Ricesheet Roll]. HKD $26
In the Chinese culture, there are 2 definition to the word “In Chinese it means the actual large/small intestines from animals that you are eating. Mainly pig’s or chicken’s.
Take it literally and "肠" refers to nothing more than a rolled up version of ricesheet (akin to a kind of flour) embedded with ingredients like prawns, BBQ pork etc. stuffed within the ricesheet. ,  an item commonly seen  in the dimsum scene in Asia, has nothing to do with any live stocks’ intestines. In the ricesheet roll sense, this delicacy is wrapped with lots of varying ingredients like char siew, prawns and drizzled over with soy sauce.

In this case, Ocean Empire had a delectable version of the typical ricesheet roll. The crispy fluffy twisted fried dough aka 油条 youtiao,  as more commonly known and a compliment with porridge in the Chinese culture, takes on a new twist as it gets coated with a thin layer of ricesheet. I guess this dish is not new in the Hongkong scene, but for me it’s a first time and immediately fell in love with this delish snack!! Very addictive indeed, despite the very sinful oiliness~

Thus compliment with Ocean Empire’s famous porridge, you can dip the fried dough in the hot steamy porridge to reduce oiliness. Or so we think.

粥.Congee.
We had ordered the Ocean Empire Congee 海皇一品粥 HKD$41 , generously filled with all assortments of pork slices, pork balls, sliced fish, squids, chicken. You want everything you get a mixture of all. Yums!

南瓜蜀米 HKD $31 is a sweet porridge boiled in with pumpkin, corns and minced pork meat. The porridge portions were really huge and makes a filing meal.

We went to one of the HK Island outlet  and here’s the address.
Shop No. 1-2, G/F., Causeway Bay Centre, No. 15-23 Sugar Street, Causeway Bay, H.K.

There are many other branches in the whole of Hong Kong, refer to their official website below for the deeds.

The Ocean Empire Congee outlet is within walking distance to Causeway Bay Sogo Departmental Store ( see below) and there’s where the Baked Cheese Tart ( more in next post) is also based at.
So walk off and digest before your next round!

Sogo at far right and the modernized  Hong Kong Tramways (DING! DING!) which also run on this route.

Or you can simply pose in the middle of the road for a photo =)

That's all for Hong Kong Part 1, stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow!
