[ Cafe Hopping in Singapore] Monochrome Fusion Bistro (Chinatown/South Bridge Road)

by - Thursday, July 02, 2015

Monochrome Bistro truly lives up to its name as a minimalist black and white themed café with very soothing interior designs. And it’s no wonder. Set up by 3 partners in the real estate industry, the interior spells style and class with no fuss. We also met 1 of the co-owners who very patiently explained the menu to us; gave us samples of the lovely sweet dessert wine Moscato d'Asti which we had the hardest time deciding whether to buy the whole bottle back;  and even helped us with photos taking. These young entrepreneurs are passionate in what they do and I really admire them, wishing I was in their shoes as well!

Well, that aside part of the menu creativity sniffs out the black and white elements and it was really very interesting to see the theme of the café intertwining with the cuisines.

The Monochrome B&W Chorizo MeatBall $9.80.

Lovingly handmade in line with the monochrome theme. We were very impressed indeed with the creativity. These crispy meatballs were coated with black and white sesame and deep fried. Chorizo (Spanish) refers to several types of pork sausages and in this case, it was a mix of minced beef and chopped chorizos.  For those who don’t take beef, there’s the Monochrome B&W Chicken Meatballs as well. Though crunchy and well paired with the sesame coating, the chorizo balls gotten too salty for my liking after more bites. Best to share with more people as it was really filling for 2 pax! Plus point: photogenic enough for you Instagram feeds.

Here again in its elements were the Monochrome Aglio Olio $18.80.

Cleverly paired up with the normal spaghetti and ink squid ones to create the monochrome contrast, the pasta was fragrantly coated with olive oil and mixed in with garlic, prawns and mushrooms. Really love the aglio olio and for us this was a great order choice, however it was a tad too oily and it would be healthier if they could reduce the olive oil.

Pan-Seared Barramundi $22.80

Barramundi aka seabass is a common seafood staple on our tables. Lightly pan fried and drizzled with white cream sauce as the main flavoring, the fish was paired with asparagus and sun dried tomatoes, topped with alfalfa sprouts.  We love the thick cuts of the seabass and it was fresh and sweet. However once again, the serving was on the oily side and it would be good to have it reduced.

We love the interior for its classy deco and clean look. However not all the dishes were in monochrome and it would be fun to perhaps offer more monochrome dishes to attract the crowd. Set lunches are also available. The service staff were also very prompt and hospitable which makes it a pleasant dining experience overall.
