[Cafe Hopping in Singapore] Paddy Hills (South Bouna Vista)

by - Thursday, April 16, 2015

Bombarded by the tons of photos on Instagram and seeing how yummy the food at Paddy Hills looks, we went to try them out. How did they fare? Read on.
I had no idea on its locations previously and it was only upon reaching that I recollected having been there way before. Standing at the exact same spot where Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House used to be!

Was astonished to see how it has been revamped into a stylish stand-alone bistro/cafe now. So different from how it looks before. Nonetheless, outstandingly distinguished at the corner, you won't miss their signage.
This is quite an "adventurous" location I would say for a cafe, among the sleeping quiet landed estates along South Bouna Vista Road.

Here's our orders:
First up, the ever so Instagram-worthy Berry Ricotta Hotcake $19.
Be warned- the portions served are HUGE. (1 plate can definitely be shared up between 4 to 5 pax).
That applies to everything, at least those we ordered. More about it later.

The Berry Ricotta Hotcake has been Instagramed the most number of times.
Served with Blueberry Sugar, Berries, Pine Nuts and maple syrup. Topped with a scoop of- not ice cream, but Mascarpone ( Italian Cream Cheese.Which would have gone unknown to most)
I was really looking forward to this, but....

...well it looks very pretty and photogenic for sure.
Theirs was fluffy and tasted cake/muffin-like, only much BIGGER in size. The hotcake was crisp at the sides, however the warmness was gone in minutes and well the fruits doesn't do much to compliment the taste of the pancake. Felt like we were eating fruits and pancake on separate entity- which could jolly well be the case.
The Mascarpone cheese sadly doesn't really do anything to enhance the 'Pancak-ing' experience.
After more spoonfuls we got too overwhelmed by the pancake and that's it.

Side Dish ( as was indicated on the menu)
Toasted Spicy Rice Cake $15.
This was no side dish.
In fact the portion was just as HUGE as the mains.
Rice Cake ( Topokki) toasted with seedweed, Gochujang mayo ( Korean chili paste mayo), and shaved cured egg yolk coating the rice cake.

Anyway, good thing this was 1 of our favourites!
Chewy, savory and mildly spicy.
These were toasted till slight brown and makes a good snacking bite with the sauce. It was fun to eat and we exercised our jaws.

Our 3rd dish came and we were filled up.

Cauliflower Fritters $12
This was under the SIDES menu and again, the portion was not befitting of any sides you would expect. Makes good for sharing if you have a Group.

Deep fried to crisp, this was another of our favorites.
Makes eating cauliflowers so enjoyable. Peppered with Paprika Salt for hints of saltiness and dipped with Masala Yogurt for a sweet dip. This simple fried cauliflower was another pleasing snack.
Unknowingly, without advise from a Lady server who took our order, we ordered another Main Dish.
Now that I remembered, we had wanted to stop ordering at 3 dishes but the server told us it would required another fresh round of waiting and hence not wanting to re-wait,  we ordered everything 1 shot. Without voicing out the orders might be Too Much for 2 girls, especially since the SIDES were as big a portion as the mains.  Was that "Ethical" ?

Hence, here you are, our 4th dish.
Potato & Fish $22.
Served with Rosti, Seared Sea Bass, Fried Egg, Sauteed Mushrooms, Deconstructed (Basic ingredients remains but different way of cooking) Bagna Cauda (dip).

Loved this- in the beginning that is.
All was great, pan seared sea bass crispy on the skin and soft white. However the more we ate, the saltier it became. The salt seasoning on the fish skin became a bit to much to bear. It would be good if the salt can be reduced much.
Rosti was good, pan-fried to crisp.  The sauce compliments well.

Paddy Hills serves more of a fusion between Asian and Western cuisine. The interior was definitely a plus as it takes on a more industrial and homely approach. There was not much crowd when we went on a weekend about 2pm.
They serve 3 different menus for different time of the day.
Breakfast: 830-1730
Lunch:1130-1730
(Followed by a lull period where the kitchen stops from 1700- 1800)
Dinner: 1800- 2200pm

Overall, Paddy Hills is a good place to hang around and chitchat. A serene quiet place where you won't hear conversations bouncing off the walls.
Though we were spaciously seated by the windows where the bright clear sunlight filtered in, couples seated at those 2 by 2 tables seemed "squashed" though?

No GST and Service Charge! 10% off Citibank for a limited period.

That's not all.
There's a huge wall painting right outside the bistro and many have taken their OOTDs there. The murals add on to the fun part and we had photos taken too.
We loved the whimsical illustrations~

I am not sure if I will return as the location is pretty out of the way, it's plus and minus, half-half.
However, if you were to order please keep in mind the portions and order minimal unless you have a large group. With their wide selections on the menu, you will have a hard time deciding.

I have given you the above heads-up so if you have tried other items on their menu that are good, please share with me.

There's only 1 bus serving the street- 200 and we boarded from Haw Par Villa Station.
