[Cafe Hopping in Singapore] Barista Workshop @ Strangers' Reunion

by - Monday, January 06, 2014

We were invited by Nuffnang for a Coffee Appreciation workshop at Strangers' Reunion and it was fantastic!

Really thankful for the opportunity and the activity was super fun and interesting.

We were there to learn some latte art from their resident barista champ, Ryan ( you will see plenty of his photos later) who happens also to the boss of Strangers. It was a real eye-opener.

The generous peeps of Strangers' Reunion also served us a wide variety of snacks and their highlt raved
waffles! My first time at Strangers was a wonderful delight as I was blown away by their yummy selections.

Welcome to the homely grounds of Strangers'!

There you have it, introducing Ryan who has won numerous awards under his belt with the latest being ASEAN Barista Champ 2013. Current & 3-time Singapore Barista Champion & Latte Art Champion, Ryan is passionate about latte art, showcased through many of his creative art works.

First art of the day- starting from a simple drawing.

Opps, I have to interrupt because Strangers' wonderful Light Bites have arrived right at that moment and we were all so ready to tuck into them!

(From left to right. Front 4 bowls)
Lotus Root Chips with pineapple tomato salsa and spicy aioli $11.90
Truffled Sweet Potato Chips with homemade aioli and chives $12.90
Truffle Fries with freshly grated truffle, truffled aioli and parmesan $12.90
\
Crispy Squid with cabbage slaw and Thai dipping sauce $13.90.

Magic Mushrooms with homemade Aioli and roasted herbs $15

Spam Fries with Kaffir lime mayo $10.90. This is like my major favourite.

Za'atar- Spiced Eggplant Fritters with lemon yoghurt $12.90.

Happy family. All tasted absolutely yummy and oh-so-good for sharing among friends! Be sure to try them when you are there~

Okay, so back to the workshop.... Ryan was about to show us more latte arts.

Within minutes, cups and cups of lovely latte art were churned out.
Only 2D and no 3D art forms as Ryan mentioned that 3D art actually destroys the original taste of the coffee and doesn't do the coffee any good, though they may look cute of course.

Pretty pretty art drawing on coffee. This is coffee art appreciation.

And... more demo about what we have to do next while sharing with us abit of Stangers' story.

Viola~ Done!!

Perfecto heart! Of course, this is a simple feat for Ryan.

Having so much fun and inspired just by looking at Ryan showing off his complicated and intricate latte art designs.

And so now's the bloggers' turn to have a go!
We had one chance each to try out how to make a heart shape latte art as was shown above.

With their first baby and feeling triumph!

So it's my turn and.........

First hands-on guidance on what to do.
Tilt the cup with coffee towards you. Pour in hot milk in the corner going slow.

Then pour in the milk faster as the drink foams up, more and more till when you are about to reach the brim then pull the milk through in the middle. Viola Heart Shape!! Done.

Time to try on my own?? Eh...

Repeating.... can't really remember what to do... aiya...

Finally, Bryan helped me at the last step.

And... I am done... PHEW!! stress....
But I did manage to do a little heart shape okay? Of course not super perfect.

I zoom in... see see? *yea!* The barely-there heart shape.

Everyone super concentrated on their task.

And on the other end, those not doing are busy snapping photos or simply looking on happily.

Time for Nuffnang's Nuffies to get a hands-on!

We have the other staff of Strangers' around as well, helping out.

The expert Bryan, decided to show us how difficult latte art is when done on chocolate drinks instead of coffee.

Much harder, but Bryan did it nonetheless with his very skilful hands.

Tada! These were all the cuppas of latte art done by us. All sorts of heart shapes haha.

Display of all the latte art done by Ryan.

Hello Hannah!!!

Finally, drumrolls please~~~~~
It's time for their other almighty famous item on the menu- WAFFLES!
I am not kidding, Strangers' Reunion's waffles were listed in Burpple's Best waffles must-visits! http://www.burpple.com/guides/singapore/best-pancakes-waffles-french-toasts-in-singapore

I was so dazzled by every waffle creation I had no time to get to know them better. Nonetheless, Strangers' waffles use Artisian Greek Yoghurt which adds on the special touch. Together with the combination of fresh fruits and of course the warm and fluffy waffles, these delicious dessert pieces are the perfect ending for your dining experience at Strangers'.

The lovely threesomes presented to us. So prettily tempting!

Price range for the waffles range from $11.90- $14.90.

Good food, great company, wonderful coffee, what a way to end the day. Plus the refreshing experience of trying to do some latte art, thanks to Nuffnang for such an engaging workshop and Strangers' Reunion's hospitality and generosity!

Hop on to Stangers' Reunion for a hearty brunch, lunch or dinner wind-down now! I will be back ^^
