 An Insight to Child Sponsorship

I started my sponsorship journey end 2011 and this has been coming two years since and I am thinking that now is a good time as ever to share on how my journey has been so far.

World Vision is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. World Vision serves all people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender and their work extends to over 100 million people in nearly 100 countries.

"As a foreign charity registered in Singapore, contributions to World Vision Singapore do not benefit from tax exemption or deductibles. Without a valid permit from the Commissioner of Charities, World Vision Singapore is also not permitted to actively solicit for funds from the public. We are grateful that such limitations have in no way hindered our supporters from contributing generously to the work that we carry out."

Why World Vision?

I am not a Christian by faith but that does not stop me from being part of World Vision. Religion, however, is definitely not a limitation towards how you can contribute and I have total trust in World Vision's operations and how the money would be put to good use.
Below is a breakdown on their donations distribution.

Accountability

They also do release annual FY Financial Reports  accounting for everything. As a donor, you will be in good hands to know how exactly your donations are being distributed. It's only human nature to have doubts in the beginning towards an organization's trustability and accountability over our donations and its allocations, because afterall, we are parting with our hard earned money monthly, but World Vision did a good job in accounting towards the sponsors.

We also get regular updates as to what goes on in our sponsored areas via emails. For e.g the recent Typhoon Haiyan, saw World Vision sending notifications and updating us about the situations over there.

Dear Child Sponsor,
Floods in Cambodia—Kirivong ADP Affected But Safe
"One village in Kirivong Area Development Programme (ADP) was affected but no deaths were reported. We would like to assure you that all the registered children are safe and have been accounted for."

Child Sponsor's Trips

There are also frequent Child Sponsor's Trips (CST) to the different countries so that sponsors can understand what goes on the outfield and get the opportunity to meet their sponsored child. So far, I have not been on a CST but I would love to go on one soon.
As quoted from World Vision:

CHILD SPONSORSHIP
"The Child Sponsorship Programme addresses the root causes of poverty and diseases, helping the children, their families and communities break the cycle of poverty.
When you sponsor a child for a donation of $45 per month , World Vision helps your sponsored child through the Area Development Programme in his/her community. This ensures that fundamental needs, such as access to clean water, basic healthcare, education, nutritious food and increased food security, and household income are not only available to the child and his community, but they will be empowered to help themselves in the future as well.
sponsored child and community receives:
Food and Agriculture
Having the right seeds, tools and adequate training on agriculture and animal husbandry, enables a community to increase food yield and diversity and provide their children with healthy diets as well as increase food security for the family.
Clean Water
Drilling wells, protecting water sources and installing water pipes from safe springs can help the community gain access to clean water. This will greatly reduce the number of child deaths caused by preventable water-borne diseases.
Healthcare
Providing vaccinations and medical treatments to children, prenatal care to mothers, education and training on proper hygiene will assist the community to develop a healthy environment for children to grow.
Education and Literacy
Education is crucial to the future of a community and key to breaking the poverty cycle. World Vision helps both children and adults learn to read and write, and works with the community to build schools, train teachers and encourage the parents to send their children to school.
Economic Development
World Vision teaches them skills and gives them small loans to grow their own businesses. As we build their capacity, families’ household income increases and the entire local economy gains strength and stability."

How You Can Help

Go on and sponsor a child if it's within your means. Instead of buying another branded bag or a new dress, why not save up SGD$45 every month and benefit a child and his/her family?

For Business Owners

If you are a business owner, whether big or small, I would encourage your company to contribute and give hopes to the millions in need esp through child sponsorship. This is definitely something I would engage in f I were to have my own business in the future. ( Giving to Make a Wish Foundation is also something that can be done collectively in a group or corporate setting.)

One-Time Gift Donations

If sponsorship is a fairly new idea and you are hesitant on the monthly contribution commitment, you can start off with their "GIFT CATALOGUE" via one-time donations. The gifts are categorized by different categories such as "Clean Water", "Food & Agriculture", "For Street Kids" etc. and I am sure you will be able to find a cause worthy of your support.
As part of their donors, a hard copy of their catalogues will be sent over periodically too and I do receive them once in a while.
Before committing fully to the sponsorship, I had started with making frequent one-time contributions and I would suggest you to start off this way.

Volunteer

As with every year end, World Vision will be having their Tree of Life roadshows round the island to advocate and raise awareness on their charity causes and the gift of sharing.
If you are interested to talk to the staff or the World Vision Child Sponsors who might be volunteering at the upcoming roadshows, visit them at the following places.

I volunteered back in 2011 at the Marina Square booth and met a very kind-hearted lady- SH, who
sponsored 4/5 kids. I was very inspired by her benevolence and she shared with me on how the organization is run and how she loved and felt comforted by the little ways she could do to help the children. Despite having children of her own, she is a selfless lady who makes the effort to care for other children as well. It was through that interaction that gave me the affirmation to sign up on the spot as a Child Sponsor.

Sponsorship Package

As mentioned, monthly sponsorship fee is at $45/month and upon confirmation tie-up with your sponsored kid, you will receive this welcome pack from World Vision.

This is my little boy, Vibol, who is 6 years old this year. :)
Along with the package you will find details of the child's hobbies and family background.

You will also receive the profile of the area that you are supporting- its demographic, the village's needs and conditions etc.

Gifts Received

Letters I have received for the past year from my kid. I signed up for the sponsorship prog in end 2011 and started to receive the correspondences from March 2012 onwards.
It has always been a joy and a heart filled with thanks to receive news from Vibol.

The letters!

As Vibol is too young to know how to write, all of the letters were actually written in Khmer by Vibol's neighbours or uncle. Vibol only drew some pictures... ^_^ The letters were then translated by World Vision Cambodia staff into English before sending over to me.

This July, I even received a report card of Vibol's! Cute right? Of course, these were filled up not by my young kid but by the World Vision facilitator.

See the colorful pages?
Really happy when I flipped through them and knowing that Vibol and his family are doing well, having fun in school, meeting new friends in school and growing healthily day by day.

The report card ended with a picture of Vibol! Looks tall for a 6 years old right?

Coincidentally, I saw this article from My Papers few days ago. a pair of well-known Taiwanese celebrity couple Fan Fan (Fan Wei Qi) and her husband Hei Ren ( Chen Jian Zhou) who had recently flew over to Nepal, as ambassadors of World Vision and had spent some really wonderful time with their sponsored kids. In total, they had sponsored over 32 kids in different countries.

It's really inspiring to read such good deeds and this is the direction I am aspiring to head to in the future as well! For now I shall just start with 1 kid and when my finances permits, to go on sponsoring more kids round the world~~

Speaking of celebrities, World Vision has no lack of celebrity sponsors and Goodwill Ambassadors such as RAIN (Korea), Jerry Yen (Taiwan), Kit Chan (Singapore), Melody Chan (Singapore), Zoe Tay ( Singapore) and so much more.
As far as businesses are concerned, we have Ms Elim Chew, president and founder of streetwear retailer 77th Street, is also a World Vision Child Sponsor.
