[Food Review] Loo's Hainanese Curry Rice (Tiong Bahru)

by - Monday, December 02, 2013

You can't be wrong about the food when you see a queue THAT long.

Welcome to Tiong Bahru's famous Hainanese fare- Loo's Curry Rice.
Behold, for this style of cooking originated from Singapore and can only be found here. It has nothing to do with Hainan Island in China. From research (source: ieatishootipost), it was documented that the Hainanese were wonderful cooks employed by the British and wealthy Peranakans as chefs back in the British colonial days. The Hainanese got their Pork Chop idea from the British mixed with the Peranakans' and TADA- you have what you can get today.

Charms of the olden days remained as part of their shop front.

Loo's has been reviewed by many local media and received much positive raves.

Patronized by renowned local film director Eric Khoo, you can just imagine how famous Loo's Hainanese Curry Rice is.

Look at the galore displays of delicious dishes for you to choose from. The Hainanese Curry rice goes with a multi range of choices such as meat, vegetables, seafood etc. What distinguishes Hainanese Curry rice from other economic rice stalls are their Chap Chye and Curry Chicken as their main focus.

We simply adore the Curry Prawns!!! The huge prawns were really fresh and succulent and complements extremely well with the fragrant curry sauce. Top up the curry sauce on your rice and *slurp* *slurp**slurp*.

The Assam Squids (sotong) were also soft and chewy- a delight to tuck into with plain white rice. The gravy's non-spicy.

Here comes the highlight.
The Pork Chops came in thick slices, real tender and oh so juicy! The Chops were well marinated with spices and deep fried coated with cream crackers crumb (which happens to be the way my Dad prepares Pork Chops too). We were there in the early afternoon and the Chops were freshly deep fried from the kitchen. Warm and yummy~~
Here comes the distinctive cabbage style only found in Hainanese cuisines aka Chap Chye. Cabbage mixed with vermicelli cooked till really soft and slimy.Yummy.

So we ordered all these~~
6 pax for these amount of food. Looks good?
2 other dishes with no close-ups were the huge Pork Meatballs aka Ba Wan (top right corner). The Meatballs were fairly normal in my opinion but nevertheless makes a good complement to the whole dining experience. And of course to make ourselves feel slightly better, we decided to be a bit healthier and added in a plate of Stir-fry Spinach (bottom left corner).

And soon, we lapped up all the dishes... apologies for the mess, but that's the whole point of this photo, no?  :)
Had a real joyous and hearty lunch over at Loo's.

If you are craving for some Hainanese Curry Rice and in town, head over to their place but do take note of their short operating hours in the day. Enjoy pigging out on authentic Singapore Cuisine!
