[Travel in Penang,Malaysia 1] Penang Hin Bus Depot Art Centre
Hi peeps! I am back from my Penang trip and have so many photos of the lovely place to show you. This is the 1st of the series coming up. If you love art, Penang has plenty of arty surprises- in Georgetown that is. Unfortunately due to time constraint, we spent 3 days and managed to explore Georgetown only. So much places to go and see if you have the time to, please venture out!
Getting to places is fairly easy as everything was done via taxi. Buses are plenty and I have friends who actually traveled via them, but you need to do a lot of researches ( like where to board, timing etc) and well though cheaper, wasn't really much and we didn't wanna waste time figuring out here and there. Even though it's just the 2 of us, the fares turn out to be always standard rates like 20RM etc. and when you divide out, it's pretty okay. Note they don't run by meter rate and blue taxis are supposed to be more premium ones. Get the red ones if you wanna save.
There's not much coverage on Hin Bus Depot but the above picture is how its exterior looks like currently. Previous researches showed 2 Lego figurines at its doors, but anyway they are no longer outside.
An abandoned bus depot in the past, Hin Bus Depot has now evolved ( or rather is progressing) to become a more inclusive, full fledged art space with a cafe concept coming up. Some of the permanent art pieces include Lithuanian artist Enrest Zacharevic's first wall murals in Penang.
Commissioned in 2012 as part of George Town Festival 2012, Enrest Zacharevic did up art wall murals everywhere in Georgetown, making Penang famous for what it is today- an art city.
Under the harsh weather conditions, I hope under Hin and the local artists will do their utmost best to preserve the wall mural paintings.
There really isn't much to see as of now. When we were there, it seems like an exhibit was in the midst of setting up. Perhaps in the near future art enthusiasts can look forward to more art displays.
Here's a tour around the premises of Hin Bus Depot- outdoors, which in fact is quite small.
Spot these treasure art works for yourselves. I love that Geogetown has so much to be discovered.
Absolutely love the stunning art pieces. What do you think?
The iconic controversial Lego figurines are now "discarded" to the far ends. I wonder if they will be restored again.
How about this? What kind of emotions does this evoke in you?
For now if you are strapped for time, there's no compelling reasons to make a special trip down. The whole place took us at most 30 mins to explore and photo-taking before leaving. Was sort of startled by the emptiness of the whole art centre upon entering. However there are workers around and I believe they will be building up something soon.
