Bornga Korean BBQ Restaurant 본가 (City Square, Johor Bahru, Malaysia)

by - Saturday, January 31, 2015

It was my first time dining in Bornga at JB's City Square few weeks back. I have not even tried them out in Singapore but in JB, it was too good a deal to miss. The pricing was really reasonable, imagine the same price tag and instead of SGD, priced in RM Ringgit instead( exchange rate at this point is: 1 SGD= 2.66 RM). Cheers!
It was a eat -till-we-burst kind of situation :)

Here's the interior. The restaurant is divided into 2 areas: With or without BBQ.
We chose to go without BBQ.

Here are some side dishes to start off before the mains!  So finger-licking good, we can have these all day. Fact is they are so filling, you can just order 1 main dish but often than not it's all too tempting to order much more. :)
* Note Bornga is not Hala-certified

Favorite sausages.

First up Budae Jjigae 부대찌개 RM 65.
My favourite of all times. Also known as Army Stew, this originated from the war times when people have to make do with remaining leftover ingredients and cooked in a large pot to boil.

In the modern days, this dish has evolved to be become a mixed pot of spicy soup filled with yummy ingredients such as sausages, spams, kimchi, rice cakes, veges and even add-ons like baked beans, instant noodles and sliced cheese.

Spicy, delectable and oh-so-yum! Suitable for 2-3 pax but for us even 4-5 pax can share this huge pot, especially if more dishes are ordered.

Water was then poured in and the pot left to boil.

After some 20 minutes, when the soup has boiled, instant noodles were added in.

Dolsot Bibimbap 돌솥 비빔밥 RM20.
One of the main staples of Koreans, has rice scooped into sizzling hotpot mixed with assorted vegetables, pork and gochujang ( chili paste).

Haemul Pajeon 해물파전 RM35.

We love their Pajeon really. Unlike typical ones which are thin layers of pancakes, Bornga's versions are thick fluffy ones almost like egg omelette and embedded with plenty of seafood and scallions which are the Jeons of this dish. Often treated as a side, this pancake came in such a huge portion it could easily be considered as a main in itself and easily suitable for 4 to 5 pax.

Total damage for 3 pax is $135.85 RM which could easily costs us double if we were to dine in Singapore's Bornga outlet.  10% Service charge is inclusive but with no GST.

When you are in City Square next time and craving for some Korean cuisine, consider making Bornga Your choice~~
