Missing Thailand?
The good folks from Spicy Thai had a group of us over for some delish Thai food and it was simply awesome. Set up by a Singaporean Ron Poh, he had his chefs invited all the way from Thailand to whip up all these authentic localized dishes, taking inspirations from Isan, a region in Northeastern Thailand. Isan is a region with food tastes heavily influenced by the nearby Laos, so expect spicer but thankfully not overly salty versions here at Spicy Thai.

Here's a peek on what we had.

Deep Fried Kang Kong $10
If you have difficulties cajoling your kids to have their veggies, this won't be a problem when the veggies go deep-fried. Coated with batter, this is Asian food goes Japanese style. The typical stir fry sambal Kang Kong goes into tempura mode. Who would have known?
Crispy Kang Kong Tempura? Cheers!

Northeastern Thai Style Mango Salad
with Fermented Fish & Crab $10
Not many dare to try this salad version when they realized there is "fermented" ingredients in it, which might relate to pungent smelling etc. We however, gamely took on the challenge to try something new.
Seriously? It was good. This is a good appetiser and comes great when accompanied with white rice. The sweetness of the mango and savory from the fermentation sacue makes a great perk-me-up. The inspiration comes from mango salad that the farmers at Isan often had with glutinous rice. In Singapore, we hardly will mixed it with glutinous rice and hence the modifications.

Lala (Clams) Bee Hoon $18
This clam bee hoon is a hot favourite among many of us and we slurped it all clean. The sweet, fresh
clams were definitely well embroiled with the stock base and bee hoon.
Must Try!

Claypot Coconut Tom Yum Soup $18
How could we not have tom yum soup when associating with Thai food?
Spicy, tasty soup with seafood in boil leads to a very satisfied stomach.
For adults the spiciness was on-point but for kids it might be just be on the spicier side.

Hommok (Thai Style Otak) $18
Otah Otah!
Contained in a "cute" coconut husk with big chunks of fish and other seafood in a spicy paste. This is the classic thai otah. Very creamy and rich with the coconut milk topped.

Jade Noodles $12 (New item)
We were introduced to a yummy new addition — Jade Noodles.
Spinach noodles stir-fry with meatballs and minced meat. Personally, I favored this as well!
It was an easy taste to like with the wok-hei and all.

BBQ Pork Belly $18
Char Siew? Yes similar.
The pork belly slices were BBQ over charcoal till charred and smokey covered in sweet BBQ sauce. The slices where just of the right thickness with good amount of fats mixed with lean meat for that juicy bite.
It was that good.
Dip with the spicy sacue for a savoury touch

Thai Walking Catfish with Spicy Lemon Soup $35
You know I am a fish lover? Well, either way, yes I am.
So imagine, I was really happy with the whole presentation. The whole fish was firm and succulent, not to mention the fresh sweetness was a perfect match together with the tangy spicy lemon soup.
Yes again, you will notice that it was cooked under charcoal grill.
 Unique, no?
Very few, if any, really uses charcoal to cook their food now. But the owner, with his determination in preserving the most authentic form of Thai cuisine, did not mind taking the extra steps in preparations.

BBQ Japanese Squid Seasonal Price

We had one more to go before the desserts.
BBQ squids! Tangy chewy and so delectable. I should have zoomed in on the sauce but yes that was some powerful punch of a sauce.
Once again, the chargrill is fragrant and this homemade dip definitely raised the BBQ squid up.
We love it.

Cha Om (Thai Dill Omelette) $10
A favourite for everyone young and old, one can never go wrong with omelette. What's special is that the dill used were especially sourced from Thailand. The owner keeps things real by trying to import as much as the local ingredients over as possible.

Desserts

Cool yourself down after all the hearty dishes. There are many to choose from but we were recommended the below.
My favourite has to be the Tapioca Coconut Milk and the icy Lemongrass Jelly.
Ending things on a sweet note definitely.

Sticky Rice with Mango $8

Red Ruby $4

Lemongrass Jelly with Aloe Vera Cubes & Calamansi $3

Tapioca in Coconut Milk $4

Location & Facilities
Spicy Thai has been around for 5 years plus and has been well received by residents nearby. The servings were generous and the pricing economical. Taste was awesome as well and there really was nothing to complain about really.
Spotting a spacious shop front, the cafe can easily accommodate a huge party of diners.
Drop by for economical, authentic Thai cuisine!

The cafe unfortunately is off the mainstream location, off Aljunied. But if good food is your main motivation, then try to head over to this Spicy Thai.
For me I alighted at Paya Lebar station and took a 15 mins walk over. It was not difficult and is located right behind the swimming complex. Easy!
Or you can choose to take a bus down from Aljunied or Paya Lebar station, just 2 stops away.
