[TRAVEL IN PENANG 4] KAFE HENG HUAT CHAR KOAY TEOW

by - Friday, January 29, 2016

Back in 2014, Kafe Heng Huat was pretty high on the radar list for it's local authentic style of Char Koay Teow. Their in-house  Char Koay Teow was claimed as one of the best in town, frequently patronized by tourists.

This is the famous lady boss who helmed the stove - Madam Soon Suan Choo. Have heard much of her "not-so-friendly" attitude but we didn't interact with her then. The ordering was pretty messy if not for the fact that she had some 'helpers' took orders from customers and sent the plates to the tables.

There were flies around and the Kafe wasn't in the cleanest, coolest condition of all. So don't expect too much of the environment. Ordering drinks is a "must" and rojak was sold in the same kafe too.
We ordered the Large version with chili and have to admit the Koay Teow, though tasty, was also overwhelmingly oily and to be honest pretty mediocre. The prawns were the highlight though- fresh and sweet,  though the portion was not much to begin with , pricing at RM10 each.
Though I love my white Koay Teow,  I guess I can have them anywhere in Singapore as well too, similarly taste.

Instead of ordering drinks, we had the ice kacang, which really, once again was the typical version you get everywhere.  Shaved iced with red beans, chendol, sweet corn, jellies and topped with an ice cream.

Down the street from Kafe Heng Huat, there are other hawker stalls too- selling Curry Mee for one.

Interestingly wearing uniformed tshirts.

If you have the time, no harm trying some local Koay Teow cuisine, but if you are pressed for time then no deal lost in giving it a miss.
