TAI WAH PORK NOODLE (HIGH STREET)
The Other Tai Wah
You would have heard that the Tai Wah Pork Noodle stall at Crawford Lane has been conferred the Singapore's one Michelin Star title. For the 'untrained' foodies like myself, I was actually surprised to find another stall with the exact same name right inside Hong Lim Food Centre. Carrying exactly the same name, the bowls and presentations were similar to the one at Crawford lane, minus the one-star.
Thing is, I had no idea of its popularity till I stumbled the owners' interview on a Channel 8 program- Tuesdays Report: Where We Connect S4.
Heading there down personally, the stall spotted a mini queue of about 8 pax when I was there on a weekday at 11am plus. It took me about 20mins to receive my order.
The stall sure has its own fan league too as the queue never cease during the lunch hour period.
The Serving
The largest most deluxe version will be served in a pretty bowl for $8 (akin to the version at Crawford Lane). When I asked what's the difference between the $5, $6 and $8 it was mentioned as the mere serving size portions such as the number of wantons and other ingredients.
Hence, I ordered the $5 version.
The Bak Chor Mee (BCM) was thoughtfully cooked and served individually by the 2nd-gen boss, explaining the waiting time.
The Taste
Served with all the rightful ingredients of BCM were the pork balls, pork slices, liver slices, minced meat. Perhaps what was interesting was the addition of wantons ( in this case only 1 piece) and dried flat fish to add on to the crunchiness with the noodles.
Overall, the taste was good with the tangy of vinegar and spicy chili to add in the kick. The noodle though, was a bit too soft and lack the bounciness. Then again, it's kinda hard to control, I understand. Also, it was a bit too watery.
However, for a 20 minutes wait, will I be back?
Probably not. For the pricing, I can definitely find a more economical BCM version which taste just as awesome; other than perhaps the lack of wantons.
What's your thoughts?
