[Food Review] World Street Food Jamboree 2015

by - Monday, April 27, 2015

World Street Food Jamboree came storming into Singapore with street food from 12 cities from Vietnam to Denmark. Hosted by World Street Food Congress, there were a total of 23 food stalls at Tan Quee Lan Street which lasted from 8-12 April. I brought my parents along to pig out on some highly anticipated cuisines.
How did it turn out?

Crowds flooded in from early in the evening.

These were our orders. Scroll down for more.

Chey Sua Carrot Cake ( Sg) $5.

There was such a hype with their fried carrot cake ( on Instagram and even on the news broadcast) which got us all excited to try how awesome they were. But, seriously, there was nothing special and even my parents mentioned it was only mediocre and we certainly have tasted better ones.

From Hong Kong Stree Old Chun Kee (Sg), we bought some 2 pieces of Har Cheong Kai with sweet potato fries $5.
Normal fried stuff. 'Nuff said.
We saw the queue and of course headed to where the crowds were but I wonder what's so special?

The stall front.

So we walked around and bought the Bon Chovie Fried Anchovy ( USA) $10, which was also widely recommended as a must-try. I have to agree these Japanese deep fried Shisamo were something special and tasted not too bad.

Fried whole with its roe intact, the Shisamo is considered a Japanese delicacy.

This was the stall...

...and the very amiable lady behind it.

Only exact payment was accepted with no change to be given. If you need to break up big notes, you gotta buy their coupons with no minimum purchase. So after spending $30, we decided to throw in another $20.

And... we spent it on Keng Eng Kee Modern Chili Crab ( Sg)
A sseafood platter of soft shell crab, calamari and fried egg plant, served with 3 special dips. $13.80
We are long time patrons of Keng Eng Kee's zichar stall and was surprised to see them there.
However despite loving their zichar, this serving unfortunately was nothing to shout about.

Here's the seafood stall from Eng Kee.

Other famous food items such as the Pepitas Kitchen Truffle roast suckling pig (Philippines) had too long a queue which wasn't barely moved and we gave up, spending the last tokens on the Churros from Churros Locos (USA).

Churros Sundae in the making.
This was my serving and we felt so cheated.

The serving was small and pathetic. Plain Vanilla Ice cream melted like crazy and with 2 pathetic churros costing us $8! We were basically drinking the cream, not having ice cream.
McDondald's soft-serve anytime please!

I felt apologetic for bringing my parents there. We spent some $50 on food which didn't fill our stomachs and went hunting for food elsewhere in Bugis. Gosh. The food fair in all its fanfare and media publicity didn't turn out to be filling for patrons. The portions were small and the food fairly mediocre ( at least for those we tried) and non too exciting. At heightened prices, we could have had much better food elsewhere.  Won't be heading back if there is a next year.

Anyway, some other stalls around...
