[Shoutout] DARPAN: The Indian Regional Film Festival is back in Singapore!

by - Sunday, October 26, 2014

Singapore's only Indian Film festival that moves into its 3rd year with the foundation of integration through the arts. The festival paved the way for many more regional Indian films coming into Singapore, Independent film makers from India and the region making their presence here and the commercial theatrical release of cinema from various states in India including Bengal and Maharshtra.

I think it's a good initiative overall for independent film makers to expose their films to international audiences. Some films have even been banned or not even making it to screening back in their homeland.

DARPAN means reflection and continues to reflect life through cinema as an art form.
14 films from across India to be screened at The Cathay and The Arts House with top actors, directors and producers from the films to be attending the festival from India, UK and Bangladesh. The festival will run from 30th Oct to 2nd Nov

Theme for 2014: Celebrating Solidarity: recognizing the team spirit and need for a holistic effort  across the board to sustain the big screen.
For non-indian natives like myself, do not worry about language as there will be subtitles on all the films

Here's a scope on the Opening film : Shesher Kobita : The Last Poem

(Bengali with English subtitles)
Singapore Censor Rating: PG

Synopsis : The film recounts the love story of Amit Ray, a barrister educated at Oxford, whose virulent intellectualism reveals itself in its opposition to all forms of tradition. He meets Labanya in  a car accident and the romance builds up in the misty hills of Shillong. Amit's iconoclastism meets  Labanya's sincere simplicity. '. Labanya releases Amit's own submerged depth of sincerity, which he finds hard to adjust to. The struggle makes him a curiously pathetic figure. The tragedy is understood by the girl who releases him from his troth and disappears from his life.

All the films for the festival have been carefully selected from over 400 submissions this year and I personally find some of the film's plots intriguing.
